Curral das Freiras é uma pequena vila cercada por enormes montanhas formadas por actividade vulcânica e erosão.
Reza a historia que o nome Curral das Freiras provém da fuga das freiras do convento Santa Clara em 1556, quando os piratas atacavam o Funchal, estas fugiram e encontram refugio neste sitio levando com elas o tesouro do convento.

The name Curral das Freiras “Nuns Valley has origin in one history. In 1566 the nuns from the Santa Clara convent escaped from pirates attacking Funchal (is the capital of the Madeira Island) and found isolation here where they also brought the convent treasure.
